There's a hashtag on Twitter right now, currently trending, and it's called #BackWhenIWasAKid. It got me thinking of the toys I used to play with, and the 'toys' that kids have these days...
This is what I played with...
From top to bottom, left to right...
Stampers, Polly Pocket, Furby, Pogs, Tamagotchi, Connect 4.
All the good stuff!
When I was little, there were always kids out on the street, playing with dolls/prams, football, and little skateboards. These days, most kids have computer consoles, such as PlayStation 3, Xbox and the Wii. We have the Sega Megadrive, and it was very rare that you got to play that. A few games of Sonic a week and you were sorted. You'd have other stuff to keep you entertained, like I said, Furby, Pogs and keeping your Tamagotchi pet alive!
My favourite ever toy was my Polly Pocket Wonderful Wedding (exact same as pictured above!). I would spend hours making Polly walk down the aisle to the beautiful tune, which I'll always remember! It kept me entertained, but when I needed a break to play outside, I would be playing Connect 4 with my friends...we all took it in turns to play each other. We had bikes too, little skateboards. The street was always full of kids. A huge group of kids would sit around and play with their pogs and have a laugh. On rainy days, we would build forts with sheets and duvets, and play inside. Remember those days?
Nowadays, I see the odd child playing outside on a Twist scooter. Nothing like it used to be. When you see kids on the TV, they're usually on their computer consoles, and very rarely playing outside. It actually saddens me. Like, I know times change, but we had so much fun as kids...we were always outside, so active. Now, kids are active on the Wii. They will literally spend hours and hours on computer consoles. I know a couple of younger people with BlackBerry phones, aged around 11/12. It's crazy how much things have changed. I think a lot of parents should rethink their decisions on what 'toys' to get for their kids. No wonder so many kids these days are lazy.
What toys did you play with growing up? I miss those days.
Polly Pockets, Puppy In My Pockets, Pokemon cards, Tamagotchis, Beanie Babies...those were the days!
